Thus far....

20 April rapidly approaches and we really haven't done a to to prepare for Warrior Dash.
What scares me the most is failing at this but I am hoping I will find the will power to kick it in and get a  little fitter before then. A 5km obstacle course.!!

We haven't been complete sedentary  Swimming for an hour and over a kilometer mos Sundays. A few days at the gym though it has been very random.
And then last Sunday we walked the 1000 steps at Mt Dandenong. Now apparently the 1000 Steps (also known as the Kokoda Trail Memorial Walk) but I don't recall it and it is the same park that we went on family picnics too when I was much much younger.

Anyway we arrived on site at 8am so an early Sunday morning start from Bacchus Marsh (probably drove 100kms to get there )  and we did it. I didn't think I would make it, but I did. Go Me!!!

I recently bought one of those sports video cam called a MUVI and this was the first time I used it and then tried to generate a video recording of my activity.

Here goes - 1000 Steps Part 1

And yes I am still not smoking. Shame about the weight gain.

Enjoy

A new year, a new view...

I gave up smoking on 1 Feb. That was the date and day I chose. However I had a smoke that evening, then one on the Saturday and then 2 puffs of one on Monday afternoon (it made me feel sick so I butted it out!). So the counter is from Monday afternoon.

Why? Umm, it was time!

Also Tash has convinced me I should do Tough Mudder. What is tough mudder, you ask? Tough Mudder events are hardcore 20 km-long obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. http://toughmudder.com.au/. All I know is 20km (*^&*^), containers full of ice for instant hypothermia (*&(%%),  and electrocution (^%$%^$). This will be in September

In preparation for this we have also signed up for the warrior dash - a 5km version of the same which is on 20 April. This means i Kind of  need to get a bit fitter (or a lot fitter)

It's a slow start but what have I done so far:
  • Tree adventures - 2 hours of climbing through  obstacles that are about 10 metres off the ground. Used loads of upper body to pull myself along cargo nets and tightropes (always harnessed on) and we did the long blue and red trails.
  • Swimming - spent 2 hours in the pool last Sunday  - 1st time after many years but managed to swim about 500m so did okay.

Anyway I will use this site to start recording where I am up to and whether I fail dismally at all this fitness stuff :)

Guess I better add a before photo at some stage...

Leaning Left

I went to a social networking thingy tonight. It was titled "Transforming the world: a network centric approach to transforming systems." and was run by a group that is about effecting change through social networking. I'm not sure what triggered me to join this group but tonight's meeting caught my eye so I went.

The meeting was a discussion with a retired RAAF deputy chief who basically talked about effecting change by strategic collaboration and I will blog about that on my KM blog.

The things of most interest tonight was John's insights into some of the more stressing social and environmental issues he has discovered through his history and research.

John was suggesting that greater social change cannot happen if we only tackle one part of the community, industry, government triangle.

John stated that we should understood all factors that affect our intended change. Eg did we understand what are the consequences of supply chain interruptions such as if we could not get fuel imported then Australia only has reserves for 3 weeks. Or we import all our yeast so if that supply was disrupted, major food manufacturing would be affected within a week! How many things do we eat that contain yeast?

How about we already consume as a planet, and have done so since mid 90s, more than can be sustained and in fact we currently use up 1.4 times our resources annually.

Or currently in Australia we are riding on the coattails of economic reforms from previous governments and national productivity is actually dropping so that we will cease being productive within 40-50 years if we don't change!

I don't know if this is all true, though John sounded pretty convincing and knowledgeable so I'm guessing he knows his stuff so it's kind of scary and calamitous.

Change is needed. I haven't quite worked out what yet or how I can help but I obviously need to think about it and do something.

More lefty musings to come!

Reflecting on Community

I went to visit my Mum at her church market stall on Saturday. I'm not religious at all, but my Mum as been part of that church community for a good 50 years I reckon, and , dare I say it, I attended the church until I was about 17 years old.
I sometimes "do the right thing" by helping lug chairs, or lend a hand here and there - and my "do the right thing" is not in anyway pre-meditated - I have been called "nice" before LOL

'Aunty Margaret' was chuffed to see me, she who was our next door neighbour until I was about 5 years old. And my Sunday School Teacher, who I might add is hovering around the 90 mark, was very pleased to see me and gave me a bag of broad beans freshly picked from her suburban vegie patch.

They are all aging and deaf, and therefore they yell a lot, and one old dear reflected that she had a few years to go to last as long as her mother who was 105 when she passed. I responded that my grandmother lasted until 96 and dear old Trix keenly advised me that was how old she was now!

I guess what I'm trying to say is communties are good, they make you feel good, yes this is based around the church premise, as that was the common denominator. But all these oldies, with their years of living, are interested and delighted to see you. Great for my ego. They watched me develop from child to teen, and now so many years later, they still care and are interested. I even ran into a guy who would probably be considered my first boyfriend, as young and silly and naive as it was!

I reflect on this from a KM perspective too, as its about sharing, stories, and knowledge and community. We need communities in our workplaces to learn and share and deliver. But we need them personally as well, for all those things previously mentioned and to grow and bond and reflect and to live.

On reflection 9/11

As the day draws to a close and I reflect on the events of 10 years ago, I note that all my ideas and concepts are based on what I have seen and heard and read through the media.

Like most who are of an age to understand, I recall where I was and what I was doing when I had heard about the attacks in the US.

My then partner and I had been helping a friend with a video camera and as she had left I had turned on the television to hear a news break that a plane had a hit one of the towers, and as the news footage zoomed in on the burning building, the 2nd plane came into view and I watched in disbelief as it hit the 2nd tower.

As the horror of these events unfolded, I found myself unable to comprehend the how and why of what had occurred. As the hours and days passed I read, and watched any information about that day trying to understand what had happened. My manager at that time, recently told me that it was the only time she struggled to help me regain focus on my work as I was so throughly absorbed in what had happened.

It did not include understanding the historical facts about what led to this drastic and horrific action, nor could I comprehend how religions, no matter whose god, would allow these actions to escalate. And in fact it probably even turned me further from religion rather than to it.

It took some time for me to let it go, though even a couple of years later a website dedicated to conspiracies gained my attention for a short time.

What I have done is moved on with my life, there was no direct connection for me to what had occurred, I suffered no loss of friend of or family. I was merely affected by my failure to understand, by my incomprehension.

So as each anniversary passes, and whilst the incomprehension still remains, it is no longer something that I try to understand. It was a horrific event, and my heart goes out to all who lost a loved one. But here, so far away in my own backyard, I just try to respect all around me, regardless of their peerage, religion, sexual identity. I am not always successful but I believe in the inherent goodness of all people and I hope that those beliefs will keep me in good stead for my future days.

Naive? Perhaps but willingness to be open to all is hopefully the better way to go. And I hope that I never have to face something so horrific at home here in Australia.

She breaks things, I fix them!

I’ve met someone and I am so ecstatic.

It’s only been a couple of weeks and I feel like the puzzle is now complete.

We are so very different, in so many ways, but think so similarly.

She breaks things; I fix them – probably best sums up how it all meshes so well.

May it never change!

So long, see ya honey...

Crush 2009 your days are numbered!!!
There's 5 of them to be exact - 5 working days until I leave that place of employment and move on to a new and challenging role.

So "Crush" what will I do about you?  I'm gonna play the same game I have been playing and do nothing.

Why? Because I have met someone new! And its scary and intense and invigourating and challenging and exciting and very very awesome!!! And she wants me!

Just so you know!

I won't blog here often - as I have a workish related blog now - and it needs my attention.

Gracias por todo

30 January - nothing special about today...

but maybe there is!

I did my first lot of organised exercise today, granted in my home and via DVDs, but it's been a while that's for sure and I did it - 30 minutes of pilates and then a 20 minute fat burn workout as dictated by Jillian Michaels (I'm hoping the fact I think she's hot will encourage me to continue!). I sweated, I huffed a lot , I felt it and my heart rate increased so I guess it did me some good! However the back is feeling a little 'tender' I guess is the right word. It's letting me know its there and I should be careful so maybe only the pilates tomorrow! But hey I did it and that's a step in the right direction.

It's not that I don't consider golf exercise, cos I know it is. Walking 5 km has to be some sort of workout but I haven't played since my first attempt at a game on 14 Jan and though I have had a couple lessons, 15 mins practice per day is also not a fat burning workout.

So.... thoughts for this week.

ipad! not even sure whether it should have a capital i or p but... what a crock! If I was an apple fan(atic) then I would be disappointed - Whilst I have an ipod and an iphone, I'm a PC girl all the way (I think it's a gamer thing!) but ooo a larger ipod touch that, as far as Australia is concerned, is missing half the things oh but it will get 3g eventually, oh and maybe books - big deal! My opinion (which is just that, my opinion) is that the big planned announcement, the hint at what's coming etc etc was a waste of time - a bigger ipod touch - whoopee doo!

Finally, Dollhouse.  and I'm gonna link ya to the Whedonesque site rather than Fox's dollhouse site cos Whedonesque is all things Joss and more....

I have thoroughly loved Season 2, loved Joss's twists and turns and being able to say "I so did not see that coming!" and I will be getting a copy as soon as I can of the epilogue which aired in the US in the last couple of hours - don't worry Joss & Co, I will buy the Season 2 DVD as soon as its released, just like I did with Season 1. I'll be damned if I'm waiting several months and getting cable tv just to watch it! I only recently turned the cable off as I really only watch stuff on my PC and wow there's a tangent for another time!

Anyway have loved loved loved Dollhouse - Eliza did an awesome job (especially Season 2) and Enver is a great find - don't lose him! My colleagues have also thoroughly enjoyed the show!

And that's me I guess...

Listening to:  itunes is on shuffle so currently Potbelleez' "Don't hold back"
Reading - off to Dooce's blog for a Dooce fix
Watching - Dollhouse S2E13 - Epitaph Two? - as soon as I get it!

Well it was a good start....

The year 2010 began and here I was thinking it was going to be a better year...

The first weekend of 2010 I spent having a pedicure, the movies with Ruby and then a fabulous day at a friends home in Eltham - work was going okay, the second weekend included a room cleanup at Mum's (the first of many!) and all was going okay!

I had decided that I needed to drop a few kilos (and yes I know I need to drop more than a few but babysteps and all) as I had gained about 5 kilos post gall bladder and hadn't shaken them yet so I have decided to do liteneasy for a few weeks. I figure that this will control my diet a little, especially as I tend to not eat breakfast, snack all day, eat a huge lunch then late at night, work out I am hungry and eat toast - not a fabulous diet by any stretch. And hopefully I will manage to improve my metabolism. 1st week and I have lost 1.2 kilos so it's a good start.

I hadn't built exercise into this plan yet, figuring that golf once a fortnight and occassionally walking the dogs will help with that.

And so to today...

1st Golf network game for the year, a beautiful day of about 24 degrees, well maintained course (Keysborough), a couple of lessons under my belt so a chance to improve the game and it was going okay until the 5th hole...

The back pings. There's pain but still movement so it's not seizing up, I decided to walk out the rest of the hole and see how I go. But no pain still there so I called it and headed home. I have been to the chiro who says its not muscular so just a pinching and I know that my lack of exercise and strengthening is to blame and its time to do something about it. Pilates for a start I guess.

I was so looking forward to playing too. I do love my golf no matter how bad I play and I enjoy the company of the network. Hopefully it will ease enough to play on Saturday... but we'll see. I will not risk my back! Back pain is so debilitating - when it goes it hurts to wipe my butt! And I have been bedridden with it - especially when I first herniated my disc about17 odd years ago so its something I always have to be wary of and manage.

Ah well hopefully my groovy new DKNY spectacles will give me a better view on life - pun intended!

bah humbug and all that guff!

ah christmas eve, and preparing for the pretense that is christmas - note the lack of capitalization - have never been fond of xmas. I love my family, Mum & Kat are the best (and Dad & Stephen & Nana RIP), so I don't need the silly season to remind me how good they are... I know and tell them frequently (and include gifts when inspired).

so worked a half day, shared a bottle of wine with my colleague, and now home and contemplating drinks with friends.

So now I need to consider what 2010 might bring...

More, better golf - have had a lesson and another scheduled for 5 Jan to help improve things - it's a start but I need to practice!

Job - hmmm - a consideration for sure....

Love life - hmmm again - crush 2009 is definitely a no-go - she has a man and it seems to suit her - and I'm not strong or saucy enough to offer anything else... so just gonna let that go

and urgh it's xmas - that's enough for now - at least it will be quiet at the office next week!

feedback wow....

I have just received an anonymous comment on my last post, thank you whoever you are…

So with the power of blogging via email – I update

Struggle has pretty much passed, it needed a cathartic moment, I had it, and it will never be spoken of again however it did involve a few stray tears, something I usually only do during movies or really sappy ads LOL so I obviously needed a serious eye cleanse… and it’s done. I guess that just makes me human, dammit! It did trigger a return to smoking though and I really need to make that give up decision again! Soon…

So things have been better, I am playing golf again which I obviously missed and I very much both enjoy and need. I’ve played 2 x 18 hole games including one at Metropolitan which was awesome and though I played more erratically than usual and only amassed 15 points, I enjoyed reminiscing about following the women the course at The Australian Open last February. It’s cool that our minds allow us to recollect events and situations that we have experienced previously and relive some of that joy. I really did enjoy watching the women’s golf. And though last week I saw Tiger play the OZ Masters at Kingston Heath and was impressed and amazed by all the brouhaha (is that how you spell it?), I enjoyed watching the women’s golf much more.

I keep track of the women’s LPGA via twitter and on Facebook and was chuffed to see Michelle Wie win her 1st pro title – well done Michelle. I also watch it on fox sports when I remember to look it up! Still keeping my eye on Katherine Hull too.

Final golf mention perhaps. 3 more matches for the women’s golf network this year – Patterson River, Heidelberg and the xmas function at Malvern Valley. Kaz, Sarah & Jude have all joined the network so hopefully we will all participate in the xmas team event even if it is the day after orphans! I’ve booked anyway!

Anne & Wayne came over for the golf last weekend, and though Anne & I went to the golf on Thurs morning we spent the rest of the weekend on gastronomic and shopping adventures. I had a really cool weekend and felt like I had a mini vacation too. Thanks Anne! They kindly bought me some outdoor win glasses and some nice new stemless ones, thanks for being such lovely guests. Now I will have to drink more wine.

Went to Knowledge Management roundtable event on Thursday at the zoo. Was really cool getting back into that mindset, sharing ideas with fellow KM practitioners and learning about how we all can better collaborate to achieve in our workplaces. I twittered some thoughts as the day progressed as did some of my peers. Check out the tweets here…

In between loading Windows 7 and MS Office 2010 beta on my PC, which I think’s pretty cool btw, I received an email from the KM lecturer at RMIT asking if I was willing to participate in both semesters next year as well. Vanessa said the feedback had been really good on my 1st session which I conducted in September and she would like me to do it again! Hell yeah! It’s even got me thinking about it now… and it will be until April LOL.

I am missing watching Dollhouse, loved the concept and the place it was heading and disappointed its been cancelled but still looking forward to seeing the remaining 9 episodes in December.

Finally, Crush 2009 update – so hmmm, it’s definitely still there. We have sorta vaguely socialized over a group lunch, and it only further cemented said crush however I am going to remain a complete wuss and not doing anything further. Though in my head I keep thinking I should risk a phone call to ask if it would be appropriate for me to ask her out for dinner! Won’t happen though.

So at the mo, life is good and I really can’t complain. Have recovered really well from gall bladder surgery and am eating and drinking most things – though I do know when I am consuming something that little bit too fatty! Did daughterly duty today and popped into the market stall at Mum’s church at her bequest, did some grocery shopping, now to washing and housecleaning followed by 2 eps of Glee which I have downloaded. That’s if I stop playing with Windows 7. Golf tomorrow and it won’t be too hot and then golf again on Friday at my cousin’s club. Oh and work!

Thanks again anonymous for your feedback – next time don’t be such a chicken and leave your name!

struggling

I struggled to motivate myself today - to go to work, to go out and be social, to participate - so I didn't!

As for the crush, I am no closer, in fact further if the rumoured boyfriend is true. Ah well - it's not like I've much to offer anyway...

Won't stop me from my vague and pathetic attempts at internet stalking - I knew where she was this last week - semi international sporting event - and did quite well from the results. But I won't mention it.

Wonder if I will be brave enough to invite her to lunch with another colleague and I - can't hurt trying anyways.

We shall see.

smokin'

I've been craving a cigarette for a couple of days now...

That's what happens when you go 'cold turkey' I guess... again

I didn't want to buy any - I gave up on1 September and have had 4 since then, whilst out drinking. 3 of them were on the one drunken evening.

So imagine my surprise at finding 2 of them in a cigarette tin sitting on my bookshelf. I was just moving it out of the way and had no idea there were any in there.

I have had 1 now. It tasted awful, has made my head spin and I'm not sure my guts are coping well but at least that craving is over now. Aah but there is still 1 more there and I know its there, wonder how long it will take me. Better smoked and gone than sitting there tempting me.

crush 2009

It's a dangerous beast but I have been enjoying chatting about all this stuff so as manic as it might appear, it's kinda good to get it out - sometimes I just need to get it out!

so - a post about my 1st crush, a quick drivel question and onwards to today....

crush 2009 - even if you don't know who you are :) - I guess you have strong arms judging you by your sporting activities, so tell me, do you want to hold or be held?

drivel

does anyone actually read this sort of hidden drivel?

1st crush 1980

I have caught up with a friend via email in the last 12 months - I say friend when in fact we were in the same class in high school some 28 odd years ago. We were never really friends - but she was my 1st crush.

We first contacted via that school reunion website about this time last year and then sent a couple of emails that fizzled out when she suggested we meet for a drink.

I was then contacted by another high school buddy via facebook and got to thinking about 1st crush again (i shall continue to call her 1st crush) and so I have emailed her again and its only been a couple of emails but suddenly I'm thinking I should stop.

This is my 1st crush - this is like some long ago fantasy, mythological creature, john hughes flick! It would be destroyed by reality - she can't possibly be as fabulous as the girl / woman I conjured in my head - the one who was the lead character in many of my short stories. Why do we I want to spoil that myth?

Truth is I don't. She may well be equally if not more fabulous than the woman I conjured in my head but I doubt it - so 1st crush - it was fun finding out a little more about you but that's quite enough!

Tuck and Patti

Tuck and Patti have been performing for over 20 years and I have been aware of them about that long.

I got their first CD “Tears of Joy” in the year it was released and I loved it and them.

I have 5 of their CDs – though I seem to just have the cover of one of them so presume that the CD remains in the car of an ‘ex’. I introduced Tuck and Patti’s music to the ex.

Speaking of said ex – I have never seen Tuck and Patti live and they have been to Australia at least once.

But the ex took the girl she was sleeping around with to see them, whilst we were still together! I know it’s been over 5 years but the bitch in me says “I bet she doesn’t love the music like I did!”

Anyway this isn’t meant to be about past bitterness – this about sharing Tuck and Patti with you all – find them – there is a lots of live footage on you tube – despite video recording via telephone Patti’s voice is amazing – my favorite track “In My Life” – by Lennon & McCartney – ya know those 20th century poets I mentioned yesterday.

Here’s a peep:

Listen to them – they are worth it

MInd altering Shakespeare?

So I quoted William on FB today, as follows:

"Doubt thou the stars are fire, Doubt that the sun doth move, Doubt truth to be a liar, But never doubt I love." Hamlet Act 2, Scene 2

And it was suggested I was heavily medicated, and hey, I am but...

That's my fave quote, it indicates to me that love is serious, I'm telling the world that my love is serious, I am serious, seriously! :) Okay so maybe I am a little medicated.

Next I'll be quoting those great poets of the 20th century, Lennon & McCartney...

gallish attitude 15/09/09

* wrote this in hospital bed in notes on iphone as I struggled to download blogger app direct.

I have a crush, actually I have a few but most I don't take seriously. Only 1 I believe might be real...ish!

My first issue is that we work for the same organisation and I have a rule -
"I don't do the crew!". I have never actually 'done' the crew, though there has been potential and I have also seen how doing the crew has damaged many a professional relationship so hence the rule.

Secondly when I first came across her - I didn't actually like her much. However the like factor was fairly influenced by others which I usually try to avoid but failed miserably in this case - I believed the hype or lack of it. So far things don't look so good huh?

I had a dream about her - and yes it was a sex dream. And yes, I know sex dreams are normal - but sex dreams with people you are not particularly thinking about are not. I only see her randomly - maybe twice a week and only in passing and for a few minutes to say hey how ya doin etc, and I'm pretty sure I hadn't seen her in the week I had the dream so I could not for the life of me work out what the trigger was that made it her.

I came to the conclusion that I was just opening doors. So the door opened and...

I still only see her maybe once or twice a week but I have noticed she seems to have become more confident in talking to me, I don't know if that is because I am scary or she lacks confidence generally, but I am a little 'puffed up' and proud that she is warming to me. Each time I see her she thinks of new things to discuss, mostly about me playing golf but it means she's thinking about the connection I guess.

So here's the deal - she plays her cards very close to her chest, I have no idea if she's gay much less interested in me. I have googled her (not much to find I'm afraid) and we have had a little more conversation. I am not totally selfish I have asked her a couple of questions. And it's been a while since I've done this and I am feeling a little kicked about in that arena,

It was only 5 years that I was a bit of a player, certainly not scared of being shot down. But now I feel so uncertain of how and where to take the next step. I think I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and ask her out for coffee and see what happens.

All I know is I smile, I get great pleasure of seeing her fleetingly once or twice a week for a few brief minutes. I like it. It's gotta mean something doesn't it?
